You know the way it's, your dog’s scratching away together with your wondering whether he’s got fleas and the mozzies got him during the night. Yep, that’s it, you’ve both got more common fleas! (And now you experience the way the dog feels because doing so itches like hell.)

Exactly what are these fleas ? Well, there’s two main type of fleas contained in UK households - the kitten flea (Ctenocephalides felis) along with the dog flea (Ctenocephalides canis) (Cat Flea pictured above). Your brand-new puppy could possibly have both sorts of flea present, although the most common is definitely the cat flea and it is competent to breed on both cats and dogs.

Several years ago, the flea season lasted from April to November, but advance of central heating and carpets, fleas are in fact annually round problem.

    Life Cycle

A grown-up flea typically lays about 30 eggs daily, which either go away canine or are laid within the carpet or bedding.

If you want to start a flea breeding colony, hatching happens in 1-10 days (influenced by temperature)

Once hatched, the larvae prey on organic debris in carpet or bedding and pupate in silk cocoons camouflaged by dirt and debris (this is why vacuuming is very important). Whenever they pupate into adult fleas, they can be hungry, very hungry all of which will jump to the dog, cat or passing human and bite to feed off their blood.

The standard adult flea lives between 6 weeks obviously, in any other case killed could produce 1200+ young - excellent if there is a place for fleas (I understand, it’s referred to as a flea market )
